Shiatsu is a method of massage therapy and body work that was founded in 1912, originating from Japan. Shiatsu is a Japanese word for "finger pressure", and is a therapy used both as a compliment to conventional medicine and as a preventative holistic therapy. It is based on Western anatomy and physiology, while incorporating the basic principles of Chinese medicine. By manipulating various pressure points throughout the body, Shiatsu helps to enhance and support the body's natural healing ability. This assists in correcting imbalances of the body, maintaining and promoting health, and preventing the progression of disease.

Pressure points ("tsubo" in Japanese), their locations, and the effects of Shiatsu on them; is based on an understanding of modern anatomy and physiology. These points are effective in treating all body systems, including; circulatory, digestive, endocrine, integumentary, muscular, nervous, and skeletal. Although "Shiatsu" translates as "finger pressure", practitioners perform Shiatsu techniques by pressing their thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows, knees, and feet onto pressure points throughout the body. The practitioners use touch, comfortable pressure, and physical manipulation techniques to adjust the body's physical structure and balance its energy flow.

Shiatsu therapy works on the whole person; not just the physical body, but also the psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of being. It is a deeply relaxing experience. Regular treatments can alleviate stress and illness, while promoting and improving health and well-being. Shiatsu can be great for self-care when it is thought of as an ongoing process. Although some people may experience significant results after their first session, sometimes a maintenance program is required to help with the stresses, strains, and ailments of everyday life. Shiatsu, like most healthy endeavors, may help a person achieve longer-lasting and more sustainable results by sticking with it over time, allowing the body to learn to relax more, and increasing balance and flexibility (for both body and mind).
